Local man buys the Angler’s Inn on the River Itchen
The Angler's Inn, which has an idyllic setting on the banks of the River Itchen
in the village of Bishopstoke, near Eastleigh, Hampshire, has been sold to Andy
Dear, through the Winchester office of leading licensed property agents,
Christie + Co.
Situated on the bank of the River Itchen, this charming village inn is a hub of
the local community, supporting many local teams, providing letting
accommodation and attracting walkers and fishing enthusiasts. The pub is just
one mile from the town of Eastleigh and half a mile from the mainline railway
station connecting to London Waterloo.
The Angler's Inn is well known in angling circles and in 1967 hosted the first
official meeting of The Flydressers' Guild, the world's largest club promoting
the art of tying flies for fly fishing. Bishopstoke's riverside was the site of an
ancient carnival, now revived by the Parish Council, which sees an annual
procession of river floats assemble opposite the Angler's Inn for judging.
The inn appears on a map from 1824 when it was named "Annie Miles's" after
the landlady at that time.
The Angler's Inn is an attractive, traditional, redbrick property comprising a
main bar, back bar with games area, 20-cover restaurant, three letting
bedrooms, two-bedroom owner's accommodation, outdoor seating for 20
customers to the side of the property, a small private garden and bench seating
to the front of the pub overlooking the river.
Proprietor Rob Davey has sold the leasehold interest in the Angler's Inn in order
to retire from the licensed trade after four years at the pub. The trade is wetled
but there is a growing food trade and a popular Sunday lunch service with
the letting rooms providing an additional income stream.
"The buyer, Andy Dear, is venturing into the licensed trade for the first time
and is delighted to have acquired this popular riverside pub," comments Keith
Goodwin, a director of Christie + Co's Winchester office. "We wish him every
success with his new business venture."
Christie + Co has sold the leasehold interest in the Angler's Inn for an
undisclosed figure after seeking £85,000 for the remaining 21 years of a 25-year
lease from Punch Taverns with annual rent of £25,000.
